Working with Ubuntu

Where we are

Posted in ubuntu-planet, Web by nigelbabu on March 28, 2010

A few days back, I had talked about the Reviewers Team and how we were trying to get people interested in reviewing the patches attached to bug reports.  After that post, we’ve been able to do some extensive organization.

New Wiki

All the Ubuntu Reviewers Team related material is now in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReviewersTeam.  Over the past few days, I’ve been filling it up with information, but the most critical bits are there already there.

A More Active Channel

I sent out plea for help in BugSquad and beginners-team mailing list and I’m very happy to get a response from  a bunch of people.  Persia and akgraner echoed the mail to the ubuntu-devel and the ubuntu-women mailing list respectively, which has also brought in some contributors.  Also, thanks to nhandler, the channel is now logged and logs available at irclogs.ubuntu.com

Patch Day

Using the same concept as Hug Days, we’re planning to have Patch Days, we’ll not have a set package as target, but we keep a particular number of bugs as target for the day.  The Patch Day would run for one day in every time zone, that would come to a total of 49 hours or so.  Dates to be announced.

An Update on Numbers

On my last post on the topic, there were 1801 open bugs without branches attached, it has gone up to 1812 bugs now, but to give a perspective, there are 14321 closed bugs.  This makes use of a more sensible method for numbers I guess.

The Women in my Life

Posted in Ubuntu Women, ubuntu-planet by nigelbabu on March 24, 2010

No, this is not a post about my girlfriends or my love life.  Today is Ada Lovelace Day and planet should be filled with blog posts about it.  After starting to contribute to Ubuntu, there are are couple of women whom I’d like to appreciate for their contributions to Ubuntu and for mentoring/helping me when I got stuck

Elizabeth ‘lyz’ Krumbach

The first team that I was part of in Ubuntu was the Beginners Team and from there on I’ve worked with pleia2 (as we all know her) as part of the UCLP, Classroom Team, and User Days Team.  Its wonderful how she gives critical input to help see all angles to an idea and make it rock solid.  I also wonder how she managed to spend so much time in between work and real life with us online creatures ;)

Mackenzie ‘maco’ Morgan

I would have never known that quilt is something other than a type of bedding if it wasn’t for maco.  I just popped by #ubuntu-motu and was looking for some pointers to start motu work.  She guided me step by step through my first bug fix, understand the packaging process and quilt, and sponsored the package too.  I still use the logs from that conversation way back in October or November when I’m working on quilt.

Hugs to you pleia2 and maco for being part of Ubuntu and being there to help.

1801 Bugs

Posted in Bug Squad, MOTU, ubuntu-planet by nigelbabu on March 16, 2010

As of writing this post, there are 1801 bugs with patches attached in Launchpad that are not Fix Released or Fix Committed and do not have branches linked.  This tells me 2 things:  (1) There are some amazing contributors out there coming up with patches. (2) We have not been clearing up the backlog of bugs with patches attached.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to change this situation by reviewing some of the bugs with patches attached.  Well, we need help and everyone are welcome, especially people working towards being an Ubuntu Developer (like me).  Patch review needs your help.  Right now, we’re focussing on all the bugs that have ubuntu-reviewers team subscribed.  This helps us get any potential patch in Lucid.

If you want to help, check out the Code Reviews wiki.  When stuck, pop by on #ubuntu-motu channel and mention you’re working on patch review and are stuck, I’m sure someone would be around to help you out.

PS:  Hello Planet Ubuntu, my first post after being an Ubuntu Member.
